Canada’s award winning magazine The Walrus in its January/February 2010 issue has an incredible photo-essay shot in the vicinity of Atikokan, Ontario.

It is not every day that a magazine of the stature of The Walrus does a feature article on a community in Northwestern Ontario:

It is titled

Revisiting his hometown in a photographic series of miniature dioramas, the artist presents life and death in northwestern Ontario, writ small.

The article is on pages 40-49.

I have placed this notice at Communities in Bloom because if ever a series of pictures capture the essence of the “wilderness environment” of this region Makarenko’s “dioramas” do it. If and when they become available on the web, I will update this notice.  In the meantime you will have to look for The Walrus on the magazine racks in our local stores.
